Rockery & alpine

The most popular way to plant alpine plants is in a rockery. These are constructed with rocks and located in a sunny open site on a slope, clear from shade cast from trees and sheltered from the wind. Where possible it is good to include a source of water such as a pond or a stream to enhance the design. Most rock plants will grow in stony soil, but it will need to be free draining and contain some substance too. The plants can grow around the rocks in pockets between them, and some will grow over them.

The other places they will flourish are in crevices in stone walls, in gaps on steps, in gravel or in paving, providing they have some soil !

See our plant list for the full range, stock may vary.
